Clearly, the best way to fight not only bad breath but tooth decay and other oral diseases is the regular use of a toothbrush and toothpaste after every meal, but that’s not always practical. There are, however, several tips that you should keep in mind to combat bad breath.
As just mentioned, it’s always a good idea to have breath mints because this is the most feasible and convenient way for most of us to fight bad breath in our every day lives, especially for the working individual. If possible, have a small travel size bottle of mouth wash and/or dental floss on hand as well. There are now even disposable dental floss tools available that are ideal to keep in a pocket or purse.
The best way to fight not only bad breath, but tooth decay and other oral diseases, is regular visits to the dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup. The dentist will recommend that you brush your teeth after every meal. While this suggestion promotes oral health, but the truth is we don’t always brush our teeth three times a day. Since this is often unlikely for many of us, you should at the very least brush every morning when you wake up and again every night before bed. Regular brushing of not only your teeth, but also your tongue, helps rid your teeth, gums and mouth of food particles and plaque that can lead to bad breath. Flossing at least once a day is also recommended, preferably at night after you’ve eaten
Avoiding or cutting down on certain foods or beverages can also help you to avoid bad breath. Beverages such as coffee (both caffeinated and decaffeinated) and alcohol (which contains sugars) are major contributors to bad breath as are foods such as garlic, onions and those containing dense proteins like dairy and meat products. Obviously, any food containing sugar should be avoided or minimized due to tooth decay as well as bad breath. Even the way you breathe can have an effect on your breath. Breathing through your mouth can lead to a dry mouth. This can create a breeding ground for odor-causing bacteria.
You may also want to keep a log of everything you eat as well as any medications you take, as they can also lead to bad breath. Share this log and any other helpful information with your dentist. By doing this you may be able to pinpoint the exact foods or beverages that cause your bad breath and even avoid them in the future.
If you use a mouthwash or rinse, it is recommended that it contain flouride and antiseptic ingredients. A pleasant mint flavor makes the experience more refreshing. The flouride and antiseptic ingredients help protect your teeth and the flavor will help to mask any odor problems.
Reasons Why Breath Smells Bad…
Finally, you could consider taking internal breath fresheners such as over the counter pills. These pills are taken before or after a meal and aid in preventing bad breath. If you prefer the natural approach, try munching on that parsley that we often discard with our meals at restaurants. It can actually help neutralize odors in the mouth!
By following these tips, you should be able to combat bad breath when it occurs. If, however, you follow the tips and continue to have bad breath, you should consult with your dentist as there may be other underlying health issues.
