Antibiotic Treatment and Bad Breath
Why Antibiotics For Bad Breath Could Make Your Mouth Smell Even Worse
Antibiotics for bad breath are one of the treatment options you might have considered using if you suffer from severe halitosis on a regular basis.
But before you decide to embark on a course of bad breath antibiotics, there are a few important things you should be aware of, not least the fact that this so-called bad breath ‘cure’ could actually make your breath smell even worse!
The vast majority of bad breath cases are caused by common bacteria which we all have – and need – in our mouths.
With that in mind, you might well think antibiotics would be the most logical way of dealing with the problem. Antibiotics work by killing off bacteria. So get rid of them and you get rid of your bad breath, right?
Well, unfortunately it’s not quite as simple as that.
In the first place, you actually need regular amounts of these bacteria as they play a very important role in helping your body to break down proteins found in the foods you eat, as well as digesting diseased oral tissue and dead cells in the mouth.
Secondly, while antibiotics for bad breath might be successful in getting rid of the bacteria in the short term, they can often have the unintended effect of creating ’super-strength’ bacteria which are even more resistant to medication.
Thirdly, you also have small amounts of a fungus known as candida living in your mouth (as well as in other parts of your body). While the bacteria are present in regular amounts the fungi are kept in check. But kill off the bacteria and the fungi can soon run riot.
In particular, this imbalance can lead to you developing yeast infections in places such as your mouth, or even your genitals.
Lastly, there are also a number of other side effects associated with the use of antibiotics which, whilst not harmful to your health, can be somewhat unpleasant nevertheless. These can include diarrohea and stomach upsets.
Don’t forget – you should always check with your own doctor or dentist for professional advice before embarking on ANY course of treatment, conventional or otherwise.
